# Diesel Price History: Weekly U.S. Diesel and Gas Prices

Weekly diesel price history for the U.S., its regions and California, plus regular gas prices for 9 states and 10 cities. From EIA, updated every week.

## About this dataset

Weekly U.S. retail diesel and regular gasoline prices from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in one table. Each row is one product in one area for one week, in U.S. dollars per gallon, with the EIA series ID and a link to the source table. History starts with the week of 3 Nov 2025, and each new week is added after EIA publishes on Monday.

## What you can use it for

Work out fuel surcharges for freight contracts from the weekly EIA diesel price. Compare diesel costs across regions for fleet budgets. Chart diesel and gas price trends for the U.S., a region, a state or a city.

## Coverage

Diesel (on-highway, all types) for the U.S. average, 9 regions (PADDs and sub-regions) and California. Regular gasoline (all formulations) for the U.S. average, the same 9 regions, 9 states (California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, Washington) and 10 cities (Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle). Weekly from 3 Nov 2025.

## Column explanations

area: the area as EIA names it, for example U.S., Gulf Coast (PADD 3), California or Houston. area_type: national, PADD region, state or city. eia_series_id: EIA series identifier. price_usd_per_gallon: retail price in U.S. dollars per gallon, including taxes. product: diesel or regular gasoline. source_url: the EIA table the price comes from. week_date: the Monday of the EIA survey week.

## Limitations

EIA publishes diesel only for the U.S., its regions and California, so state and city rows are gasoline only. Prices are EIA's weekly averages, not prices at individual stations. When EIA revises a recent week, the saved row is not updated.

## Pipeline steps

1. **Published Prices** (Input): Existing saved prices, used to exclude keys already collected.
2. **Discover Areas** (Step): Read all listed EIA areas and exclude previously saved series-week keys.
3. **Collect Area** (Map): Checkpoint each area's history batch and verify recent prices against its live EIA table.
4. **Validate Prices** (Step): Count skips, check required fields and unique keys, then save verified prices.
5. **Prices** (Output): One source-backed retail fuel price for one EIA product, area and week.

- **EIA weekly retail fuel prices**: prices (2,080 rows); revision 2, published 29 Oct 2026, produced by pipeline v1. Weekly EIA regular all-formulations gasoline and all-types on-highway diesel prices. Append-only by EIA series and week; initial 52 weeks. Private pipeline output.
