# Get a Slack alert when a price drops

Connect a Slack channel, write an alert rule on a dataset, and watch the first alert arrive. About five minutes.

Alerts turn a dataset into something that tells you when to look. This tutorial adds a rule to the price tracker from the [previous tutorial](https://www.jsonify.com/docs/tutorials/price-monitoring) and sends it to Slack. The same steps work for any dataset and any channel.

When a dataset publishes or a run finishes, each alert rule evaluates its condition. A match fires one alert that is delivered to the channels the rule selects: in-app, Slack, email, webhook or browser push.

A rule evaluates on every publish and fires to the channels you pick.

## 1\. Connect Slack

1. **Create an incoming webhook in Slack.** In Slack, open the channel you want alerts in and add an _Incoming Webhook_ app to it. Copy the webhook URL.
2. **Add the integration in Jsonify.** Open **Integrations → Add integration → Slack**, paste the webhook URL and give the integration a name such as `#market-radar-alerts`.
3. **Test it.** Use the test action on the integration; a message arrives in the channel within a few seconds. The integration shows as connected.

A connected Slack channel. One integration can serve many rules.

> The webhook URL is a secret. Anyone with it can post to your channel. Keep it in the integration only.

## 2\. Write the rule

1. **Open Alert Rules → New alert rule.**
2. **Describe the condition.** Either pick a quick-start chip or describe what you want. Jason proposes the rule; you confirm it.

    > Alert me when a product’s current price is at least 10% below its previous price in the Live product offers dataset.

3. **Choose the channels.** Tick **In-app** and the Slack integration you connected. Add email if you want a copy.
4. **Confirm.** The rule appears as a card with its toggle on.

The rule as a card. Toggle it off any time without deleting it.

## 3\. See it fire

The rule evaluates the next time the dataset publishes. When it matches, one alert is created per event: it appears on the **Alerts** page and the bell badge, and the Slack message lands in the channel with a link back to the rows that triggered it.

![Alerts page showing a fired alert for 18,420 meaningful price drops with time, channel and rule](/assets/images/product/tut-slack-alert.png)

The alert as it appears in Jsonify.

What the Slack message looks like:

> **Meaningful price drops** · Market Radar Prices fell by at least 10% across 18,420 tracked offers. Top: Sony WH-1000XM6 (Amazon) $348 → $279. Open the rows →

## Variations

* **Run failures.** “Tell me in Slack when any pipeline in this workspace fails.” Useful for hearing about escalated repairs.
* **New items.** “Alert when a new product appears in the catalogue.”
* **A specific value.** “Alert when any product from Apple goes out of stock at Best Buy.”
* **Jason’s judgement.** “Alert when a promotion looks like a clearance.” Jason evaluates each new row against the description.

See [Alert rules](https://www.jsonify.com/docs/alerts/rules) for every condition type and channel.
