# The sidebar

Arrange the left navigation for everyone in a workspace. Rename, hide and reorder items, add sections and links, and pin dashboards, datasets and pipelines from their cards.

The sidebar on the left of every page belongs to the workspace, not to you. When you rearrange it, everyone in the workspace sees the same layout, and so do visitors to a [shared workspace](https://www.jsonify.com/docs/workspace/sharing). Use it to put the dashboards and datasets your team opens every day one click away.

There are two ways to change it: **Pin to sidebar** on a card, or the full editor in **Settings → General → Sidebar**.

## The default layout

A new workspace starts with three sections:

| Section | Items |
| --- | --- |
| (no header) | Home, Conversations |
| Data collection | Pipelines, Latest runs |
| Connections | Analytics, Integrations |

The rows-left meter and **Settings** sit at the bottom of the sidebar and are not part of the layout. The sidebar is described item by item on [Your first pipeline](https://www.jsonify.com/docs/getting-started/first-pipeline).

## Pin to sidebar

The menu on a card has **Pin to sidebar**:

*   **Dashboard cards** on Analytics. The dashboard is added to the section that holds **Analytics**.
*   **Dataset cards**. The dataset is added to the section that holds **Pipelines**.
*   **Pipeline cards** on Home. The pipeline is added to the section that holds **Pipelines**.

The toast reads **Pinned to sidebar**. If that section is hidden, the item goes into the first visible section. Once pinned, the same menu item reads **Unpin from sidebar** and removes it again (**Unpinned from sidebar**).

Files have no pin action on their cards. Add one from the editor with **Add link → Files**.

## Settings → General → Sidebar

Headed **Sidebar — Arrange the left navigation for everyone in this workspace. Hide items, add sections, and link straight to dashboards, pipelines, datasets, files or any URL. Hidden pages stay reachable by URL.**

The editor lists each section in order, with a **Preview** of the result beside it on wide screens. Nothing changes for anyone until you press **Save sidebar**.

### Sections

Each section starts with its header and four controls:

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Header field | The section’s label, up to 40 characters. Leave it empty for no header (No header). |
| Move section up / Move section down | Changes the order of sections. |
| Hide section / Show section | Hides the whole section. The section that holds Home cannot be hidden (The section holding Home stays visible). |
| Delete section | Removes the section. A section that holds built-in items cannot be deleted until they are moved elsewhere (Move its built-in items to another section first). |

**Add section** at the bottom adds one named **New section**. A layout can have up to 12 sections and 60 items.

### Items

Each item row shows a drag handle, the icon, the label, its kind (**Built-in**, **Dashboard**, **Pipeline**, **Dataset**, **File** or **Link**) and these controls:

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Drag handle | Drag the row to reorder it, or drop it into another section. An empty section reads Empty — drag items here or add a link. |
| Rename | Opens a label field (up to 40 characters). For dashboards, pipelines and datasets, the original name shows in brackets after a custom label; clear the field to go back to it. For links, you edit the label and the URL. |
| Hide / Show | Hides the item from the sidebar. Home is always shown. |
| Remove | Takes a link, dashboard, pipeline, dataset or file out of the layout. Built-in items can be hidden but not removed. |

A pinned item whose dashboard, pipeline or dataset has been deleted shows its old name struck through in red. The sidebar skips it; **Remove** clears it from the layout.

Renaming a dashboard, pipeline or dataset in the workspace updates its sidebar item too, unless you gave it a custom label.

### Adding a link

**Add link** under a section opens **Add sidebar link** with five tabs:

| Tab | What you pick |
| --- | --- |
| Dashboard | Any dashboard in the workspace. |
| Pipeline | Any pipeline. |
| Dataset | Any dataset. |
| Files | A file a pipeline produced. The link always opens the latest version of that file. |
| URL | A Label (up to 40 characters) and a URL. A full address starting with http:// or https:// opens in a new tab; a path starting with /, such as /pipelines/runs, stays in the app. Press Add link to add it. |

The first four tabs have a search box and a list. Items already in the sidebar are greyed out and marked **In sidebar**. Clicking any other item adds it to the section at once.

### Saving

| Button | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Save sidebar | Saves the layout for everyone in the workspace. The toast reads Sidebar saved. Enabled once something has changed. |
| Discard | Throws away unsaved changes. |
| Reset to default | Shown once the layout has been customised. Asks for Confirm reset, then returns to the default layout (Sidebar reset to default). Pins and custom links are removed. |

## What hiding does and does not do

Hiding only tidies the sidebar; it does not change who can open what. A hidden page still opens from its address and from links elsewhere in the app. Everyone in the organisation can still reach everything in the workspace.

On a shared workspace, hidden items and sections are left out of the visitors’ sidebar, and so are **Latest runs** and **Integrations**. Hiding an item does not remove it from the share: every ready dataset, published pipeline and dashboard is still included. When Jsonify adds a new built-in page after you have customised the sidebar, it appears in its default section so you can find it, and you can hide or move it like any other.
